🔪 How to Make Keto Salsa
Add all of the ingredients to the bowl of a food processor or mini chopper.
Pulse until well combined, but don’t over mix.
You still want it a little chunky.
Serve with your favorite low carb tortillas or even Homemade Keto Tortilla Chips.
💡 Tips for Making the Best Salsa
- Definitely opt for the fire roasted tomatoes, rather than plain diced tomatoes. The fire roasted tomatoes give a hint of smoky flavor to the salsa that is just delicious.
- Don't forget to drain the liquid in the canned tomatoes. This will prevent the salsa from becoming watery. There will be plenty of liquid from the fresh lime juice to give it just the right texture.
- Don't overmix in the food processor. You want everything well blended, but still want some chunkiness as well.
- In a pinch, you could use pickled jalapeño, but I highly recommend using fresh if you can.
- Don't skimp on the cilantro, you need that fresh flavor that is quintessential to salsa.
☑️ Storage Instructions
How long does homemade salsa last? Store leftover salsa in an airtight container for 3-4 days in the fridge. I would not recommend any longer than that.
🍴 What to Serve with Homemade Salsa
Tortilla Chips are the most popular vehicle for scooping up this delicious low carb salsa. I prefer to make mine from scratch, but in a pinch, I have used store-bought Keto tortilla chips before and they work well too.
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- If you can't find fire roasted tomatoes, you can use plain canned diced tomatoes instead. You can even use fresh tomatoes, though I would blanch them first.
- If you're up for a little more heat, you can sub the jalapeño for a serrano pepper. Serranos are between 10,000-20,000 SHUs on the Scoville scale, verses Jalapeños, which are between 5,000-8,000 SHUs, so don't use too much.
- If you don't have limes on hand, you can sub with fresh lemons, though I would hold off until you do have limes. Limes really give it just the right flavor you want in a good salsa.
- As I mentioned earlier, you can opt for a pinch of ground cumin if you'd like. I wouldn't add too much, maybe ½ teaspoon or so.
- You can also try swapping the yellow onion for red onion, to give it a slightly sweeter flavor.
What is homemade salsa made of?
Classic salsa typically has a mix of tomatoes, onion, jalapeño pepper, lime and cilantro. Some recipes will also add garlic (like this one) and spices like ground cumin, and even a pinch of sweetener to help with the acidity of the tomatoes.
Is it worth it to make your own salsa?
A resounding YES, it sure is! Considering this recipe uses canned tomatoes, making it even easier, it's definitely worth making it yourself. This way you can control what goes into it and don't have to worry about unhealthy additives of hidden carbs. The flavor is honestly SO much better than store bought salsa!
Is salsa okay for keto?
Absolutely! All the ingredients in this recipe are low carb and Keto friendly, making ideal for a Keto diet.
How many net carbs are in salsa?
This Keto salsa recipe has just 4 net carbs per serving.
