How to Make the Best Steak Marinade
Add all of the marinade ingredients to a mixing bowl.
Whisk until well combined.
Pour over 4 of your favorite cut of steak, I used NY Strip. Place them in an airtight container or food storage bag.
Place in the fridge and let the steaks marinate for at least 2-6 hours. Keep in mind, this time is needed to infuse the flavors.
Once the steaks have marinated, take them out of the fridge and let them come to room temp, or for about 30 minutes.
Grill your steak until it reaches your preferred level of doneness, I prefer mine between rate and medium rare so I pulled mine off at around 125F (it will continue to cook as it's tented and resting) and allow it to rest for at least 10 minutes before cutting into.
Steak Cooking Temperatures/Degrees of Doneness
- Rare (cool red center): 120-130°F
- Medium Rare (warm red center): 130-135°F
- Medium (warm pink center): 135-145°F
- Medium Well (slightly pink center): 145-155°F
- Well Done (no pink): 155-165°F
I always recommend using a meat thermometer to be sure your steak reaches the perfect temperature.
FAQs about Steak Marinade
What is Steak Marinade? The ingredients in steak marinades vary but the components are often similar. A good marinade should include a balance of acid, some type of oil, and seasonings. It's used to enhance the flavor of meat and to lend a certain amount of tenderness to meat.
Is marinating steak needed? This is the big debate. Steak marinades will only tenderize meat to a certain point. Marinating is a really great way to create extra moisture into certain meats that tend to be dry when grilled. But for me, the main purpose of marinades is to add flavor. So, while it's not necessary, it does indeed add a depth of flavors that many love.
Can I reuse Keto steak marinade? For food safety purposes, it is not recommended you reuse marinade that that you've used for raw steaks or chicken.
Should I add a sweetener to my marinade? The only sweetness that should be used in marinades comes from the balsamic vinegar. Sugar and other sweeteners, like honey, can burn under the intense heat of the grill. And while a good char is a good thing, no one wants the outside of their steak burned.
How long can steaks marinate? Technically, you can leave the steak in marinade for several days in the fridge. But after about 4-6 hours the effectiveness of the marinade doesn't really increase.
Can I make this Keto Steak Marinade recipe in advance? You sure can. If you want to make up extra marinade to use on other meat, just keep in it an airtight container in the fridge for up to several days.
Once you've tried this marinade, feel free to try it on grilled pork chops or tenderloin, chicken breasts or even brush it over grilled veggies! You're simply going to love it!
