❤️ Why You'll Love This Hollandaise Sauce Recipe
- Velvety smooth and creamy
- Thick and rich lemony butter sauce
- Takes just a few minutes to make
- Uses only 4 ingredients
- Serve over veggies, fish or Eggs Benedict
If you like Béarnaise Sauce, you will love this sauce! Hollandaise sauce is very similar, but has no tarragon, only lemon juice. It's such a beautiful sauce, very thick and velvety!
I made some to serve over my Eggs Benedict, but you can also use this Keto sauce over some asparagus or broccoli, if you'd like.
Hollandaise sauce is a very simple sauce made from egg yolks, butter and fresh lemon juice and is absolutely perfect for any veggie that you typically serve with a squeeze of lemon. It's the perfect Low Carb sauce to help dress up plain veggies!

🔪 How to Make Keto Hollandaise Sauce
Heat a saucepan with water to a gentle simmer. Add the egg yolks and lemon juice to a heat-safe mixing bowl.
Whisk using a hand mixer (or whisk by hand) until the mixture has doubled in volume.
Place over the boiling water to make a double boiler and cook while whisking, for about 1 minute. Then, very slowly stream in the melted butter while whisking.
As soon as the sauce comes together, it's ready!
It should be thick enough to coat the back of a spoon and stay separated.
☑️ Storage Instructions
Store leftover sauce in an airtight jar for a few days in the fridge. Gently warm it up when you're ready, making sure not to heat it up too quickly as it could break the sauce.
💡 Tips for Making Hollandaise
- Similar to making a custard, hollandaise sauce is made by slowly and gently cooking the egg yolks over a double boiler. Take your time drizzling in the butter, to get the perfect consistency. By the time you are finished whisking in the butter, the sauce should come together and be ready to serve.
- This is not the best make ahead type of sauce. While you can certainly reheat it, it's definitely best served right after it's ready.
- If the sauce gets too thick, add in a tiny bit of hot water and whisk. This should loosen up the sauce perfectly.
🍴 What to Serve Hollandaise Sauce On
There are so many different recipes that would be great with a drizzle of hollandaise sauce over the top. Here are some of my favorites:
- Baked Salmon with Asparagus
- Baked Red Snapper
- Eggs Benedict
- Lemon Chicken
- Broiled Lobster Tails
- Air Fryer Broccoli
- Grilled Broccolini
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
Though this is intended to be a very simple sauce made from just egg yolks, butter and lemon, you can certainly make small additions if you'd like. Here are some ideas to consider:
- For a more pronounced lemon flavor, add some lemon zest to the sauce.
- For a slightly nutty flavor, slightly brown the butter before whisking it into the egg yolks. Just be sure it's not too hot or it will scramble them and ruin your sauce.
- Add a pinch of smoked paprika to add a hint of smokiness.
- For a boost of flavor, add in a teaspoon of dijon mustard.
- For a more Béarnaise sauce flavor, add in some fresh chopped tarragon.
- If you don't have lemons, you can use white wine vinegar instead.
Is hollandaise sauce high in carbs?
Not at all! This low carb hollandaise sauce has only 1 carb per serving, making it perfect for a Keto diet.
What sauce can I use instead of hollandaise?
The only suitable sauce that I would recommend as a replacement for hollandaise sauce is Béarnaise sauce.
What's the difference between béarnaise sauce and hollandaise sauce?
Though both sauces are made with butter and egg yolks as their key ingredients, there are some differences to note. Béarnaise Sauce is typically made with shallots, fresh tarragon and white wine vinegar, while Hollandaise Sauce is made with lemon juice, no shallots or fresh herbs.
I actually love both sauces so much that I make my Béarnaise Sauce recipe as a combination of both sauces.
Can you have Eggs Benedict without hollandaise sauce?
While hollandaise sauce is the traditional sauce served with Eggs Benedict, it simply wouldn't be the same without it. I would recommend replacing it with a similar sauce like Béarnaise, rather than omitting it all together.
What sauce can you have on low carb diet?
There are so many wonderful sauces that we can enjoy on a Keto or low carb diet. I have some great ideas listed below!
