You can either serve this tasty, low carb slaw immediately or refrigerate it until chilled. The longer it sits in the refrigerator, the more the cabbage absorbs the flavors of the dressing.

☑️ Storage Instructions

The great thing about this Keto coleslaw is you can store leftovers in the fridge for up to five days in an airtight container.

💡 Tips for Making This Homemade Coleslaw Recipe

  • Make your life easier and use a store-bought coleslaw mix. There is really no need to shred your own cabbage or carrots for this recipe. But honestly, I prefer to make my own coleslaw mix because it’s really pretty easy.
  • Allow the coleslaw to sit for at least 30 minutes so the cabbage has time to absorb all the wonderful flavors of the dressing.
  • While you might be tempted to just toss in all the dressing ingredients over the slaw mix, it really is worth taking the extra time to whisk them together separately. This ensures all the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the coleslaw.

🍴 What to Serve with Coleslaw

This healthy coleslaw recipe is the perfect side to so many proteins, but personally, I love to serve it with anything grilled. Here are some of my favorites:

🔄 Substitutions and Additions

  • While this is a fairly traditional coleslaw that is made with store-bought slaw mix, you can actually mix up your own if you’d like. I recommend doing this if you happen to have cabbage on hand already or if you want to increase the ratio of carrots or red cabbage to the green cabbage. A food processor would certainly make it easier, but a sharp knife would work just fine.
  • If you don’t have apple cider vinegar, you can use white vinegar instead.
  • Another option is to use a broccoli slaw mix, which is also easily found at most grocery stores in the same area as you’ll find a bag of coleslaw mix.
  • If you don’t have monk fruit/allulose, you can use your favorite keto sweetener or even Stevia.
  • You can really get creative by adding in some julienned veggies like bell peppers, red onions or even Napa cabbage.
  • For a slight onion flavor, you can add chopped chives or scallions. Don’t add too many or it can quickly overpower the slaw.
  • You can also add in some fresh herbs like dill.

Is Coleslaw ok for a Keto diet?

This question is asked a lot. The answer is, most definitely! Quite frankly, coleslaw is the perfect Keto side dish. Since the Keto coleslaw dressing is mayo based, it’s super creamy, adding healthy fat to your Keto diet.

Because cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable, that makes it low in carbs but loaded with nutrients. Serve with your favorite protein like chicken or pork for a complete meal.

Can I eat KFC Coleslaw on Keto?

According to their website, KFC’s coleslaw has 14 total carbs per serving and 10g of sugar. That’s not completely ideal if you’re on a Keto diet. This KFC copycat version comes in at just 5 total carbs (2 net carbs) and only 3g sugar per serving, which is more suitable!

How Many Carbs in Coleslaw?

The main ingredient in this low carb coleslaw recipe is cabbage which is a very low carb vegetable. One serving of this recipe only has 2 net carbs.

Can I eat cabbage on keto?

Without question, you certainly can! Cabbage is not only low in carbs, but is also healthy and very filling, making it perfect for a Keto diet. I actually cook with cabbage a lot and have quite a few Keto friendly cabbage recipes like Fried Cabbage with Sausage, Cabbage Roll Soup, Slow Cooker Cabbage, Roasted Cabbage Steaks and Cabbage Roll Casserole

What can you use instead of mayonnaise in coleslaw? Can I make keto coleslaw without mayonnaise?

If you can’t have mayonnaise or prefer to use something else, Greek yogurt will work just fine and even add a little protein to the recipe.

Healthy Benefits of Cabbage

Not only is coleslaw a good choice for a low carb side dish, the main ingredient, cabbage, has many healthy benefits. It’s a great source for vitamins B6 and C, folate, fiber and antioxidants.

Studies show these nutrients help reduce inflammation, heart disease, arthritis and other chronic illnesses. You can read more about the nutritional benefits of cabbage in this article.

I’m 34 and have failed keto many times due to low willpower, but I’ve been making this consistently for like 6 years even when not on keto. I double the Swerve and would recommend that if you like it a bit sweeter like the fast food chicken chains do it. This blows them out of the water though and I love fast food coleslaw, so that’s saying something. Amazing recipe.

    1. I’m so glad you love the coleslaw and just know that you’re not alone. We all fail every now and then, but the important thing is to get back on track and don’t look back!

  2. Hi! Thank you so much for all of your wonderful recipes. Your app is my go-to for meal ideas. I appreciate all of the time and effort you put into doing all of this.

I have a question about a substitution for this recipe. I am out of monk fruit/allulose. Would powdered Stevia be a suitable substitution? Thanks for your time! 😀

    1. Hi! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the recipes and thank you for the kind words. For this slaw, powdered stevia on its own can get a little too sweet and a bit bitter in dressings, so if you use it, start with the smallest pinch and adjust from there. You can also leave the sweetener out entirely. The dressing will just lean a little more tangy, but it still works.

GREAT coleslaw recipe!!! We even make it when we are not doing a low carb diet. Also, it is so easy to throw together in no time for a quick side dish.

    1. Thank you so much! I love this recipe also. I take it to potlucks all the time and it’s always a hit, even with the ones not low-carbing.

SO NICE for picnics or when others are eating picnic type stuff I shouldn’t. Tastes great and is wonderfully satisfying as a side dish. It’s going in my keto notebook!!

    1. Thank you so much. I love recipes like this one and my cucumber salad for summer picnics and gatherings.

I’ve been making this coleslaw for over a year now. While trying other keto slaw recipes I keep coming back to this one. I’m finally ready to leave my thoughts.
This coleslaw tastes better than what you would buy at the deli. Best keto coleslaw over all!! Thank you for sharing this recipe. 😊

    1. Thank you so much for taking the time to share this, it really means a lot! I’m so glad this coleslaw has become your go-to, especially with all the other recipes out there. Love hearing that it even beats the deli version!

  6. Do you have just a vinegar recipe without the creamy option Thank you for all your Awesome recipes love all the ones I have tried

I love this recipe! I make at least three times a month. My husband (who generally doesn’t like keto recipes) even likes it. I don’t add as much vinegar and lemon juice because I can’t seem to find 16 oz bags in my area. Thank you for all the work you do for keto followers. I use quite a few of your recipes and always look forward to your emails. God Bless!

    1. Thank you for taking the time to comment. I am thrilled that you’re enjoying my recipes, and I truly appreciate the kind review so much.

  8. Have made this coleslaw several times and it just keeps getting better. I add a squiggle more mustard it kicks it up a bit. Thank you althousedonna

    1. I love that “squiggle” more of mustard, that’s awesome! I’m happy to hear you like the slaw 🙂

    1. It will be 1/6th of the recipe. It is hard to give the exact measurement of a serving because the cabbage wilts the longer it sits.
