💡 Tips for Making the Best Keto Buffalo Sauce
- Read ingredient labels: One of the most important tips for creating a good Keto version of any recipe is to read the labels of all ingredients you use. Ensure they don’t contain hidden sugars or carbs.
- Choose Keto-friendly hot sauce: Some hot sauces contain sugar, which is not Keto-friendly. For example, Frank's Hot Sauce is a great option as it is Keto-friendly and has excellent flavor.
- Alter the heat: For the perfect Keto Buffalo sauce that suits you, adjust the amount of heat to your personal preference. If you prefer a milder sauce, you can reduce or omit the cayenne pepper altogether. If you enjoy a spicier kick, feel free to add a bit more.
- Tailor the flavors: Taste your sauce as you go and adjust the ingredients accordingly to ensure a balanced flavor profile. A little more vinegar or butter can help tame the kick and add a little more tang.
- Adjust the consistency: If you prefer a thicker sauce, you can simmer it a bit longer to reduce it to your desired consistency. Alternatively, if it’s too thick, add a splash of water or more hot sauce to thin it out.
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- Garlic Buffalo Sauce: Add 2 cloves of minced garlic or 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Honey Buffalo Sauce: Add 2 tablespoons of sugar-free honey substitute.

- Fresh Herb Buffalo Sauce: Add a fresh herb flavor with some fresh oregano and or thyme.
Why Is It Called Buffalo Sauce?
Buffalo sauce is named after the city of Buffalo, New York, where it was first created at the Anchor Bar in 1964. It was originally made as a sauce for chicken wings, which became famously known as Buffalo wings.
Is Buffalo Sauce Spicy?
Yes, Buffalo sauce is typically spicy due to the hot sauce and cayenne pepper. However, you can adjust the level of spiciness by reducing or increasing the amount of cayenne pepper according to your preference.
Can I Make Buffalo Sauce Without Butter?
Yes, you can substitute the butter with ghee or a plant-based alternative like coconut oil for a different flavor. However, butter is traditionally used for its rich taste and creamy texture.
Can I Eat Buffalo Sauce on Keto?
Traditional store-bought buffalo is typically not recommended for those on Keto. It's usually made using canola oil and has other inflammatory ingredients.
But by making your own, grass fed butter takes the place of canola oil, making this a perfectly healthy and keto-friendly sauce.
