🔪 How to Make Keto Coleslaw
Add all of the ingredients, except for the coleslaw mix into a mixing bowl.
Whisk together until combined.
Next, add your cabbage mix to a large bowl.
Pour the dressing over the top.
Toss until well combined and the coleslaw is well coated in the dressing.
You can either serve this tasty, low carb slaw immediately or refrigerate it until chilled. The longer it sits in the refrigerator, the more the cabbage absorbs the flavors of the dressing.
☑️ Storage Instructions
The great thing about this Keto coleslaw is you can store leftovers in the fridge for up to five days in an airtight container.
💡 Tips for Making Keto Coleslaw
- Make your life easier and use a prepackaged coleslaw mix. There is really no need to shred your own cabbage or carrots for this recipe.
- Allow the coleslaw to sit for at least 30 minutes so the cabbage has time to absorb all the wonderful flavors of the dressing.
- While you might be tempted to just toss in all the dressing ingredients over the slaw mix, it really is worth taking the extra time to whisk them together separately. This ensures all the ingredients are evenly distributed throughout the coleslaw.
🍴 What to Serve with Coleslaw
This Keto coleslaw is the perfect side to so many proteins, but personally, I love to serve it with anything grilled. Here are some of my favorites:
- Smoky Chipotle Lime Grilled Chicken
- Grilled Skirt Steak Chimichurri
- Cajun Shrimp Skewers
- Grilled Chicken with Rosemary Citrus Glaze
- Grilled Lime Cilantro Shrimp Skewers
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- While this is a fairly traditional coleslaw that is made with store-bought slaw mix, you can actually mix up your own if you'd like. I recommend doing this if you happen to have cabbage on hand already or if you want to increase the ratio of carrots or red cabbage to the green cabbage. A food processor would certainly make it easier.
- Another option is to use a broccoli slaw mix, which is also easily found at most grocery stores in the same area as the coleslaw mix.
- You can really get creative by adding in some julienned veggies like bell peppers, red onions or even Napa cabbage.
- For a slight onion flavor, you can add chopped chives or scallions. Don't add too many or it can quickly overpower the slaw.
Is Cole Slaw Keto Friendly?
This question is asked a lot. The answer is, most definitely! Quite frankly, coleslaw is the perfect Keto side dish. Since the Keto coleslaw dressing is mayo based, it's super creamy, adding healthy fat to your Keto diet.
Because cabbage is a cruciferous vegetable, that makes it low in carbs but loaded with nutrients. Serve with your favorite protein like chicken or pork for a complete meal.
Can I eat KFC Coleslaw on Keto?
According to their website, KFC's coleslaw has 14 total carbs per serving and 10g of sugar. That's not completely ideal if you're on a Keto diet. This KFC copycat version comes in at just 5 total carbs (2 net carbs) and only 3g sugar per serving, which is more suitable!
How Many Carbs in Coleslaw?
The main ingredient in this low carb coleslaw recipe is cabbage which is a very low carb vegetable. One serving of this recipe only has 2 net carbs.
Can I eat cabbage on keto?
Without question, you certainly can! Cabbage is not only low in carbs, but is also healthy and very filling, making it perfect for a Keto diet. I actually cook with cabbage a lot and have quite a few Keto friendly cabbage recipes like Fried Cabbage with Sausage, Cabbage Roll Soup, Slow Cooker Cabbage, Roasted Cabbage Steaks and Cabbage Roll Casserole
Healthy Benefits of Cabbage
Not only is coleslaw a good choice for a low carb side dish, the main ingredient, cabbage, has many healthy benefits. It's a great source for vitamins B6 and C, folate, fiber and antioxidants.
Studies show these nutrients help reduce inflammation, heart disease, arthritis and other chronic illnesses. You can read more about the nutritional benefits of cabbage in this article.

You're so welcome. I have a Mexican Coleslaw on my site that is not mayo based.

I love this recipe! I make at least three times a month. My husband (who generally doesn’t like keto recipes) even likes it. I don’t add as much vinegar and lemon juice because I can’t seem to find 16 oz bags in my area. Thank you for all the work you do for keto followers. I use quite a few of your recipes and always look forward to your emails. God Bless!

Have made this coleslaw several times and it just keeps getting better. I add a squiggle more mustard it kicks it up a bit. Thank you althousedonna

I love that "squiggle" more of mustard, that's awesome! I'm happy to hear you like the slaw 🙂

What would be the ratio to make your own coleslaw mix?
Keto Cooking Christian
You would need about 16 ounces of shredded cabbage.
Linda Monteith
what size is a serving, 1/2cup?
Keto Cooking Christian
It will be 1/6th of the recipe. It is hard to give the exact measurement of a serving because the cabbage wilts the longer it sits.
