❤️ Why You'll Love This Thousand Island Recipe
- Classic thousand island dressing
- Creamy texture and tangy flavor
- Made with just a handful of ingredients
- Easy to make in under 5 minutes
- Sugar-free
It only takes a few simple ingredients to create the most amazing homemade sugar free salad dressing! And it honestly taste even better than the store-bought brands. Making your own low carb dressing is much easier than you might think!
What I love about it is I know exactly what goes into it and there aren't loads of preservatives. And while I realize it's easier to open a bottle of the pre-made dressing, another perk to making your own is you can tweak the flavors to your liking.
This Keto Thousand Island Dressing is one of my favorite condiments on hamburgers, to use as a dipping sauce for grilled shrimp and veggies. But of course, it makes an amazing low carb homemade salad dressing as well!

💡 Tips for Making Sugar-Free Thousand Island Dressing
- For the best flavor possible, chill the dressing for at least 30 minutes to one hour before serving.
- If you're not a fan of the small chunks of pickle and onion and prefer a smoother dressing, you can blend it up in a bullet blender or food processor.
☑️ Storage Instructions
Store in the fridge in an airtight jar for 5-7 days.
🍴 What are the uses for Thousand Island Dressing?
Thousand Island dressing is a great and versatile dressing. Yes, it's great on salads, but there are other creative ways you can put it to good use! Here are some of my favorites:
- Spread on your favorite burger, like these Smash Burgers or these delicious little Bacon Cheeseburger Bites
- Pour over this Big Mac Salad
- Use in this Bacon Cheeseburger Casserole
- Use in place of tartar sauce with this Air Fryer Cod
- Spread on these Keto Reuben Sliders
- Use it as a dipping sauce for Chicken Tenders or fish sticks
- Drizzle over vegetables to give them extra flavor and a boost in healthy fats
🔄 Substitutions and Additions
- For that "special sauce" flavor, add in some smoked paprika
- If you don't have relish on hand, you can finely chop up some pickles to use instead
- For a tangier twist, use half mayonnaise and half sour cream or Greek yogurt
- Instead of onion, you can use chopped chives of shallots
- If you don't have apple cider vinegar, you can use red wine vinegar or white wine vinegar
Can You Freeze Keto Thousand Island Dressing?
You sure can, but with just a small word of caution. Though this low carb salad dressing will freeze for up to a couple of month, because it contains mayonnaise, the texture will slightly change when thawed. To reincorporate all the ingredients, just give it a good whisk and enjoy!
Is Thousand Island Keto?
Absolutely! As long as you use a sugar-free or "no sugar added" ketchup you are good to go! The main ingredient is mayonnaise, which if of course Keto friendly.
What are the Carbs in Thousand Island Dressing?
Traditional Thousand Island Salad Dressing that you buy in the store typically has 4 to 5 grams of added sugar per serving. But because we use a sugar-free ketchup in this recipe, there is only 1 carb per serving.
How healthy is Thousand Island dressing?
Because the main ingredient in this low carb thousand island dressing is mayonnaise, which is loaded with healthy fats, it's actually perfect a Keto diet.
How long does Thousand Island dressing last in the fridge?
This homemade thousand island dressing will last 5-7 days in the fridge, if kept in an airtight jar.
What's the difference between Thousand Island and Big Mac sauce?
Though Thousand Island Dressing and Big Mac Sauce are very similar in flavor, it is believed that Big Mac Sauce doesn't actually use ketchup, but rather paprika instead. This is a bit surprising to some, especially considering that ketchup is probably the most popular condiment for hamburgers.

Can I use dill relish instead of sugar free sweet relish?
Keto Cooking Christian
You can, though it will lose that little hint of sweetness that you find in traditional Thousand Island Dressing.

What kind of sugar free relish do you purchase?
Keto Cooking Christian
I haven't made it in a while, so I can't remember the brand, sorry.

Mt Olive makes a No Sugar Added Sweet Pickle Relish which I got at my local Safeway tonight. FWIW, it uses Splenda as a sweetener, in case you have concerns about the type of seeetener.
Keto Cooking Christian
Yes, Mt. Olive is one of my favorite brands too.

This recipe is awesome! First I made homemade mayonnaise with 1 egg yolk and 2 cups of pure olive oil, then I took a cup of that and made 1000 island -- with a chopped up Bubbe's pickle since I could not find sugar-free relish. But it's really good just the same! Can't wait to drizzle it on a pile of corned beef, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut for a keto Reuben sandwich!

Sounds delicious!!
